The 2016 Gathering and Lochearnhead Highland Games

Clan Gregor Featured on 60 Minutes Australia

We had a hugely successful Clan Gregor Gathering at the Lochearnhead Games this year largely due to Frank McGregor from Australia who brought a film crew from Australia’s TV Channel 9 with him. Frank had put in a terrific amount of effort to Australia’s Scottish Week and to promoting Clan Gregor during that event. The broadcaster, Charles MacGregor Wooley, and Channel 9 were so enthralled that they immediately flew to Scotland to make a program on Clan Gregor. They interviewed Sir Malcolm and Lady MacGregor, filmed us at Blair Atholl and the Games, and then went on to other MacGregor sites; taking Frank with them as their guide. Watch the completed video here.

Clan Gregor also beat the MacLarens, in straight sets, in the Tug of War (i.e. twice in a row). We can’t rest on our laurels though!   We’ll need to keep fit and be ready for all comers next year.

We’ve been given some fine photographs of the event thanks to the generosity of Richard Findlay of Fotofling Scotland. Visit and search for “The 2016 Lochearnhead Highland Games” for more detailed views of Lochearnhead and it’s very special atmosphere.

We greatly appreciate our international members who come to Lochearnhead. Lutz from Germany, Frank from Australia, and Iain from New Zealand were the standard bearers leading this year’s clan march. We also had Max and Pat Skelton from the USA as well as our stalwarts from Scotland, England, France, Germany, and America. The tug o’ war team reflected virtually all of the above nationalities, which makes for great camaraderie and international liaison.

A Very Special Day

The weather was excellent and we finished the day with a very pleasant formal dinner at Killin’s Bridge of Lochay Hotel. All in all, it was a very special day and much enjoyed by all.

Sunday saw the departure of Frank and the film crew to different parts. We had the Annual AGM and visit to Balquhidder church and Rob Roy’s grave before saying our farewells. Some of us then spent the following week on the archaeological dig near Dalmally. More on this and our other clan projects later.

Sincere thanks to all for a terrific 2016 Gathering.
Keep well and see you next time.
